About Morningside
We are a specialist private investment firm providing liquidity solutions to private equity funds and their investors through two primary strategies:
- GP-led Secondaries: Investing in proven, existing PE assets in partnership with high-quality sponsors while providing liquidity to their investors.
- NAV-based Financing: Providing lending and structured solutions backed by portfolios of PE assets.
Not familiar with these? That's okay. We focus on innovative and fast-growing segments of the private equity market, offering our investors best-in-class risk-adjusted returns through unique strategies and overlooked opportunities.
We maintain an entrepreneurial culture, but we aren't a startup. Morningside has a proven track record, committed capital, and approximately $600M in AUM.
About the Role
We believe operational excellence is a real and lasting advantage in our business, and we use technology and AI extensively to achieve it. This is a new role dedicated to doing that well: making the firm faster, sharper, and more scalable through thoughtfully built software.
Reporting directly to the Managing Partner, you'll turn how we work into reliable tools and systems — internal applications, automations, and the workflows that run our fundraising and fund operations. You won't be handed a backlog of tickets; you'll be handed problems and trusted to build the right thing, properly. Our edge comes from the judgment and relationships of our people; your work is what makes that team dramatically more effective.
Why Work for Us
We aren't your typical investment firm, and this isn't a typical engineering job. If you want to build real things, see them used, and understand the business they serve, Morningside offers a different path:
- Build Rare Expertise: Most engineers build one small piece of a product they never fully see. Here, you'll work directly with the Managing Partner across the entire operation and develop genuine, marketable knowledge of private equity investing and fund management along the way. In a field where many engineers wonder where their work is headed, deep judgment in a specialized, high-value domain is exactly the kind of expertise that compounds — and that technology doesn't replace.
- Build From Scratch: You will design and ship tools end to end, not maintain someone else's legacy system. The scope is wide open and the impact is yours to define.
- Outsized Leverage: We are a lean firm. The tools you build will be used by the whole team within days, not quarters. Your work compounds.
- Direct Access: You'll work shoulder-to-shoulder with the Managing Partner and the senior team. Decisions are fast, feedback is immediate, and there is no layer of bureaucracy between you and the problem.
- Balance: High performance doesn't have to come at the expense of your personal life. We work hard and move fast, but we have genuine respect for work-life balance and individual autonomy.
- Compensation: We offer market-competitive compensation with meaningful upside for the right person, including the potential to participate in the firm's success as you grow with us.
What You Will Be Asked To Do
You will be the firm's builder and its in-house AI expert, working across four areas and moving between them constantly.
Build Tools
- Design, build, and maintain internal tools, automations, and AI "skills" that make the team faster and reduce manual work.
- Take a problem from a rough description to a working, reliable tool — making sensible decisions about architecture, data, and security along the way.
Develop Integrated Applications
- Build and run larger operational workflows across the business that impact how we invest, manage funds, and serve our clients.
- Integrate our systems and data sources so information flows cleanly and securely, without manual re-keying.
Ensure Security and Efficiency
- Make sure the tools and data the firm relies on are accurate, secure, and dependable — and that they scale as we grow.
- Hold our internal systems to a high bar. Reliability, data integrity, and security are non-negotiable.
Advise Us on AI
- Be our resident AI expert: stay on top of how the field is moving, and develop a clear-eyed view of what today's models and tools are genuinely good at — and where they fall short.
- Translate that into practical guidance for a non-technical team, so we adopt what's useful and avoid what's hype.
- Serve as our informed first read on how AI and AI infrastructure may affect the sectors, assets, and companies we look at, supporting the investment team's own diligence and judgment.
What We Look For
We are looking for a self-directed builder with genuine engineering judgment — someone who can move at the speed of modern AI tooling without shipping something fragile.
- Real Engineering Fundamentals: You are not just a prompter. You understand how to write efficient code, design sensible databases and backends, and reason about security and data integrity — and you know where things tend to break. This is the bar that matters most to us.
- A Builder's Track Record: You likely have 2–5 years building software in fast-moving environments — startups or small teams where you owned things end to end — and a portfolio of things you've actually shipped, ideally things others relied on. That said, we care more about what you've built and how you think than about years or pedigree.
- AI-Native: You use modern AI development tools fluently and aggressively to build faster and better, and you stay genuinely current as the field moves. You have a sharp sense of what today's models can and can't do, and you treat them as a force multiplier, not a crutch.
- A Sense of Ownership: You work autonomously. There is no team to hide behind and no one assigning you tasks day to day. You take full responsibility for the integrity of what you ship.
- Intellectual Agility: Our corner of the investment world is specialized and moves quickly. You're genuinely interested in learning it — absorbing private equity, fund structures, and unique deal terms well enough to build the right tools for them. Prior finance or PE exposure is a plus, but curiosity and learning speed matter more.
How We Hire
We keep it short and substantive. Expect a conversation about what you've built and how you think, a look at your past work, and a paid take-home build project so we can see you work on something real. We'd rather see your judgment in action than read about it.
Think you're a fit?
Good engineers always look under the hood. Send your resume, links to things you've built (GitHub, live projects, demos — whatever shows your work best), and a short 2–3 sentence note on why this role interests you. We prefer that over a long cover letter. Use the subject line "Application – Forward Deployed Engineer".
